WALKING

Did you know walking is the most common mode of transport, after driving, but is often neglected. It forms a convenient and sustainable link to public transport and local facilities and is an ideal form of exercise and relaxation. The perfect way to connect with your surroundings!

The National Travel Survey suggests that:

  • Around 89% of journeys up to 1 mile are undertaken on-foot; and
  • Around 30% of journeys between 1 and 2 miles are undertaken on-foot.

Car sharing is when two or more people share a journey. This is one of the easiest and most effective ways of reducing solo car usage. In fact, if every UK motorists received a lift one day a week, congestion and pollution would be reduced by 10% and traffic by whopping 20%!

Parking

Parking on site is limited and on-street parking in the local area is constrained. Accordingly, if able, please use sustainable means of travel (walking, cycling, bus and train). If travelling by car, car sharing or travel by taxi is preferable. Should you travel by car and park on the roadside, please be respectful to local residents. It is encouraged that you utilise formal car parks rather than on-street parking.

Measures

Your Travel Plan Coordinator will promote a range of measures to encourage the uptake of active travel and use of public transport. These include:

  • Promote health benefits of walking and seek to ensure that pedestrian routes are appropriately maintained.
  • Negotiation of discounts for cycling equipment with local retailers.
  • Promote the heath, fitness and time saving benefits of cycling, through specific events such as National Bike Week.
  • The TPC will review and provide information to staff about potential for car sharing and identifying car share partners.
  • WhatsApp group for car sharing.
  • A 'guaranteed ride home' scheme if a car share arrangement fails.
  • The TPC will liaise with local public transport providers, and where possible, obtain 'taster tickets' to be distributed.
